Accra, Aug. 9, GNA - Nii Armah Ashietey, Greater Accra Regional Minister, has called on Muslims to use the period of fasting to preach and advocate for peace in the country during the upcoming 2012 elections. He said peace was a precious commodity and must not be undermined, adding that there was the need to maintain the peace currently prevailing in the country during the election period. Nii Ashietey made the call when he presented items worth GH¢5,000 to the Adabraka, Osu, and Tudu Central mosques in Accra. The items which included 30 bags of rice, 15 bags of beans, 15 bags of sugar, 15 bags of maize, 10 boxes of soap, and 100 cups were to support the Muslim communities in those communities during the fasting period.

He said over the years Government had supported the Muslims during their fast in the holy month and would continue to assist in order to maintain the good relationship. Nii Ashietey wished the Muslims a fruitful fasting period and urged them to continue to pray for continued peace and tranquility in the country. Mallam Alhasan Abdul-Khadir Adam, Imam of the Adabraka Central Mosque, thanked the Minister for the donation and appealed to him to assist the community to complete its Central Mosque. Sheikh Haruna Ashie Neequaye, Chief Imam of the Osu Central Mosque, also expressed gratitude to Government and the Minister for the continuous support over the years towards the fasting and gave the assurance that all Muslims in the community would benefit from the items.
