The Greater Accra Police Command has launched an investigation into claims against ASP Asong Ayrakwa, the Nima District Police Commander for allegedly campaigning for the National Democratic Congress in the Ayawaso East Constituency.

During a recent health walk organised by the NDC in the Ayawaso East Constutuency, ASP Asong Ayrakwa addressing the crowd called for peace, chanting "peace will win" in reference to the upcoming December 7 general elections.

But a viral video on social media allegedly doctored appears to show him chanting "we will win" which some interpreted as support for the NDC.

Party representatives reportedly rejected the allegations against ASP Ayrakwa during a meeting between the Greater Accra Regional Police Command and representatives from the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ayawaso East and North constituencies, recommending that the issue be handled cautiously.

Both sides encouraged police leadership to make sure the probe is comprehensive and unbiased and to refrain from drawing hasty conclusions.

The Constituency Chairman of the NDC in Ayawaso East, Mohammed Ramne, stated: “This district commander has been working so hard to make sure that there is peace in Nima for somebody somewhere to doctor a video saying that the district commander is saying that the NDC will win. In fact, God will punish the person.”

“The comment ‘we will win’ doesn’t mean NDC will win or NPP is going to win. Peace will win; we should use our wisdom,” a representative of the NPP stated in a report by citinewsroom.com.

But DCOP Arhin Kwasi Annor, the Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, said the command had noted the NDC and NPP pleas but will look into the matter on its own.

“You are saying that he was talking about peace and that peace should win. That is your side. We are also going to conduct our own investigations,” he stated.
