Nine basic schools within the Nzema East Municipality of the Western Region have been educated on the different usage of plastic waste as a means to stop indiscriminate disposal of waste in the sea.

This is to help save the sea from increasing dumping of such materials into it.

The students, tutored by German Volunteers at the Ankobra Beach resort, used plastic waste to build phone cases, bags, dustbins and also received education on protecting aquatic lives and the duty as peer educators to share the knowledge with their communities to improve on hygiene and healthy living.

The engagement with the student falls under the "Ankobra Beach Resort's Waste Management and Environment Education" along the Ankobra River to create awareness on Eco-friendly and sustainable behaviour.

Mr. Claus Egger, Manager of the Beach Resort said the Resort was thankful for the support of the Environmental Protection Agency in helping to educate the school children on the need to protect water bodies, waste management and also increase fish stock.

He said the preservation of the beach and the environment would further improve upon the health of the people, attract tourists and boost the resources of the assembly.

Mr Albert Mensah, Training Officer with the Nzema East Municipal Education Office who monitored the training and education session said, PTAs would be engaged on the subject matter to galvanize support to achieve the dictates of the project.

He was happy that school children were involved adding, “we know these are change agents and the education on plastic recycling will definitely help to maintain cleaner societies ".

Eric Quayson, from Wild Seas Organisation, an organization that works to protect sea turtles bemoaned how plastics in the sea continue to destroy aquatic lives through choking.

He said most mammals including dolphins and turtles have fallen victims to these plastics dumped into the sea and called for a change adding, "we cannot afford to lose all the beautiful things dolphins can do to entertain us".
