Nkaseim (B/A) June 11, GNA - Teachers of the Methodist Primary School at Nkaseim in the Asutifi District of Brong-Ahafo last Monday begun an indefinite sit-down strike in protest against what they said was "barbaric and derogatory behaviour" of some youth in the community. The Reverend Hannah Amponsah, Headmistress, told the Ghana News Agency that some residents of the town had turned the school's classrooms into their permanent place of convenience, making it difficult for classes to go on during the day.

The headmistress said the school's Parent Teacher Association and the School Management Committee fully supported the action by the teachers.

Rev Hannah, who is also the Area Pastor of the Methodist Church, said several attempts by the school authorities to get the Area Council and the Traditional Authorities to help put a stop to the practice had proved futile.

She added that the teachers were determined to continue with their action until a permanent solution was found to the problem. When GNA asked who the suspects could be, the Reverend Minister said they could be the young drug abusers who often used school premises as hideouts for their activities. 11 June 04
