Nkoranza Catholic Hospital records 43 births at Christmas

The Saint Theresa’s Catholic Hospital at Nkoranza, recorded 43 births between December 24 and 31 last year.

Mrs. Diana Amoako, Midwife in-charge of the Maternity Ward, who disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said nine of the pregnant mothers went through caesarean operations before delivery.

Mrs. Amoako said all the mothers were in good medical conditions, except one who had since been discharged, adding that the births comprised 20 males and 23 females, with a twin included in the latter group.

She explained that Miss Akosua Baagyei, an 18-year-old mentally-challenged mother from Kransieso, a suburb of Nkoranza, was still on admission, receiving ‘special care and attention,’ and information reaching the Hospital authorities indicates that “no man accepted the responsibility of her pregnancy”.

Mrs. Amoako, however, stated the male child of Miss Baagyei “is feeling very strong, but the mother needs to be fed properly to regain enough strength to breast-feed the child, hence her delay at the hospital”.

The midwife, therefore, appealed to the Nkoranza Municipal Assembly, the Department of Social Welfare, as well as Philanthropists and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), to provide some food and financial support towards the upkeep of the needy mother and her child.
