Government has awarded on contract the Nkoranza-Jema Nkwanta road to link the Kumasi-Techiman-Tamale highway to facilitate the socio-economic development in the beneficiary communities of the area.

The 30-kilometre stretch of road is expected to be completed by the end of 2016.

Mr Kwadwo Agyei-Dwomoh, Nkoranza North District Chief Executive, in an interview with Ghana News Agency said the project, when completed, would promote business activities in the district as well as Nkoranza South Municipality.

He said travellers from the northern parts of the country would use the road to cities like Kumasi, Accra, Tema and Takoradi, while it could also connect places in the Volta Region through Nkoranza, Ejura, Atebubu and Yeji.

Mr Agyei-Dwomoh said initial work on the project has started, pending its full commencement by two contractors assigned to work on it.

He said the district assembly has appealed to government to construct a hospital at Busunya to serve as a referral centre for the various health facilities.

Mr Agyei-Dwomoh said traditional authorities in the area have released a 120 acre-land for the proposed hospital project.

He expressed concern that the Nkoranza Saint Teresa’s Catholic Hospital is still serving as the only referral centre for more than 20 health facilities. He said a fully-fledged hospital at Busunya would relieve the hospital of the pressure.

Mr Agyei-Dwomoh said the Nkoranza Municipality and Nkoranza North are in discussions to establish a midwifery training school at Nkoranza to train interested qualified senior high school graduates.
