Space FM has been following developments on the arrest of a man described as a ?prominent government official? for drug trafficking in New York.

The Majority chief whip, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, told Space FM this morning that the Nkoranza North NPP MP, Eric Amoateng, took a leave of absence from parliament on the 7th of November and has not been seen since.

?Mr Amoateng did not attend any parliamentary session this week?, he added. Hon. Mensah Bonsu pointed out that parliament has so far failed to make contact with the MP who bears the same name as a 55-year old man who has been busted with another man Nii Okai Adjei as they dismantled 136 pounds of heroin concealed in crates of pottery in New York.

The MP is said to have sought permission from parliament to travel to the United States to see to his son?s surgical operation.

The Chief Whip said the house is seriously looking into the matter and that the Chief of Staff has been duly informed to seek clarification from the US Embassy on the matter..

Space FM has been trying to reach the MP but his cell phone has been switched off. Top government official do not his whereabouts either. The Mp?s wife when reached on phone stated that she had not seen her husband for the past four days.

The people of Nkoranza are dumbfounded by the story.

?We are praying that the man arrested is not our MP?, a 46 year old woman told SpaceNews at Nkoranza.

When asked whether the long spell of silence from the MP is not lending credence to reports of the MP?s arrest, Kwame Oppong Kyeremeh said ?that could be coincidental, this world is full of funny things, our MP is too gentle to mess up?.

?How can such a generous and gentle man involve himself in dirty deals?, said a 49 year old woman who could not vote in the last parliamentary election because she was too sick.
