Nkrumaists Parties Finally Unite

Mon, 20 Oct 1997 Source: --

Accra,(Greater Accra Region) 16 Oct. The Arts Centre in Accra was today set agog by activists and supporters of three splinter parties of the Nkrumaist tradition as their leaders signed a document uniting them. The eight-point document, described by the signatories as "irrevocable and irresistible", is titled "Unity of Nkrumaist Parties" and climaxes unity moves initiated in March. Four members each of the People's National Convention (PNC), People's Convention Party (PCP) and the National Convention Party (NCP), and stalwarts described as the "Supreme Council of Elders", signed the document amidst applause from the supporters. Mr. Felix Amoah, PNC First National Vice-Chairman led his group, Mr. Paul Donkor Ayifli, Acting National Chairman led the PCP group and Mr. Ebo Tawiah, NCP leader, led his delegation. Dr Hilla Limann, President of the Third Republic, and Mr. Kojo Botsio, a founding member of the Convention Peoples Party (CPP) who are joint Chairmen of the Council of Elders also signed the agreement. Under the document, the parties and the Council of Elders reaffirmed their "faith in the indivisibility of the Convention People's Party (CPP) and committed themselves irrevocably to the vision of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and unity of the Nkrumah political family". It also commits them to pursue the cause of restoring and rebuilding the CPP. The document said "at the appropriate time, they shall convene a joint national congress at which the matter of name and symbol shall be determined". Other highlights of the document are the setting up by the parties of a Working Committee with equal representation to oversee the implementation of the unity process. "The parties have adopted the Supreme Council of Elders, under the joint chairmanship of Dr. Hilla Limann and Mr. Kojo Botsio as a facilitating and mediating body for the Working Committee". Dr. Limann, President of the third republic, urged Nkrumaists to avoid "devious mental attitudes" which have bedevilled attempts at unity since 1992. He asked them to learn from their mistakes, be bold, noble and large-hearted enough to leave the destructive attitudes of the past behind and turn to the constructive future ahead. "We must avoid yet another fiasco at all costs," he added. Mr. Kojo Botsio, a minister in Dr. Nkrumah's government and co- chairman for the occasion, called for a disciplined, dedicated, committed and loyal membership for the party to gain the respect it deserves. The three leading signatories to the document acknowledged that there are more hurdles to overcome and pledged their commitment to its success. Activists and supporters later went on a procession through the streets of Accra.
