No accommodation for teachers, no school

The Ghana Education Service (GES) will not open a new school in any community where there is no accommodation for teachers.

Mr Ben Effah, Circuit Supervisor of Education in charge of Nkwabeng in the Nkoranza District, said this when he addressed a forum for residents of Nankuma, a farming community in the district to discuss problems affecting standard of education in the area.

Mr Effah noted that most teachers refuse to accept posting to the district, because of lack of accommodation and said even where there is any, they walk between six and 10 kilometres everyday to and from school.

He said this, obviously, retard the standard of education because by the time the teacher reaches school, he would be weary and cannot give of his best.

Mr Effah, therefore, advised chiefs, elders and Parent-Teacher Associations to ensure that there is accommodation for teachers posted to their communities.

Mr Evans Jampana, Headteacher of Nankuma L/A Primary School, complained of lack of furniture and books for pupils and appealed to guardians to provide educational materials for their wards if they want them to acquire quality education.

He advised parents not to send their children to farms during school period since the practice retard standard of education.

Mr. Mohammed Akanmaah-Grunshie, Chairman of the Unit Committee, appealed to the Nkoranza District Assembly to provide roofing sheets and cement for rehabilitation of schools that are in deplorable conditions.
