The Ghana Police Service has reminded the public that the use of firecrackers and other types of explosives this festive season is prohibited.
Executive Instrument (E.I) 21 of 1999 prohibits the manufacture, possession or carriage of firecrackers popularly known as ‘knockouts’, display shells, artillery shells, ball and canister shells.
The police in statement signed by Assistant Commissioner of Police, David Eklu on Wednesday, 13 December 2017 said the law will be enforced.
“The Service wishes to state that to ensure strict compliance with this provision, personnel deployed for law enforcement duties during this Christmas period have been charged to arrest any person or group of persons who act contrary to this Instrument for prosecution,” the statement said.
The use firecrackers during Christmas is a common feature in Ghana however, people have raised concerns about the safety of the public when these explosives are in use.
People have been hurt and some houses burnt as a result of the irresponsible handling of the explosives.
The law to ban fire crackers was adopted by parliament in 1999.
