Ho, Feb. 19, GNA - Dr Kwadwo Afari Gyan, Chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana on Thursday said no list of names no matter where it came from would be accepted for registration when the voter registration exercise opens next month.

He said under the laws, the prospective voter during registration must be physically present to go through the process of registration. Dr Afari Gyan was briefing Volta Regional representatives of political parties and media personnel on the replacement of the voters register.

He said instances of District Chief Executives (DCEs) or party chairmen sending list of names for registration were illegal.

Dr Afari Gyan reiterated that it is wrong for such officers to issue instructions to registration officers. "I know you are interested in what is going on but you don't have any responsibility for what is going on", he added.

He said the DCE for example is a political boss and his job description does not include elections and advised that people who have complaints should report to the appropriate quarters.

This time round such infractions of the law if it comes to the attention of the EC will be punished and in the same vein E.C officials found misbehaving will be drastically dealt with, he added.

The EC Chairman said it was wrong for political parties to collect voters' identity cards from their members for keeps. Mr Isaac Kofi Boateng, Director of Finance of the EC, said the Commission had no resources to register all Ghanaians resident outside the country.

Thirty-two participants attended the briefing, which was sponsored by USAID and KAB Consult.
