The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has assured that there would be constant electricity supply to Ghanaians before, during and after the 2019 Christmas festivities.

The ECG says it is aware that consumption of electricity increased during such celebrations so its engineers are on standby to ensure every challenge is addressed immediately.

The assurance comes in the wake of the nationwide blackout on Tuesday, November 26.

The ECG blamed the widespread blackout on technical challenges, saying, the challenges were “beyond its control”.

Greater parts of the Greater Accra, Ashanti, Eastern and Northern Regions were plunged into darkness on Tuesday, November 26, 2019.

A statement from ECG said: “The Electricity Company of Ghana Limited wishes to inform its customers who are experiencing power outage this evening, 26th November, 2019 that the outage is due to a technical challenge upstream. Customers should please note that the situation is beyond ECG’s control”.

In the Northern part of the country, NEDCo also reported a challenge resulting in a complete outage at the Tamale Bulk Supply Point (BSP) where the entire Tamale township and its environs are supplied with power.

Answering questions on Onua FM’s Yen Sempa on Wednesday, the Director of Communications at the ECG, William Boateng said “we have a special plan for the impending festivities”.

“We know people will use electricity and we are doing all we can to ensure that nothing of that sort happens.” He added, “our engineers are on standby. We shall do everything it takes for us to have power in the festivities”.
