Accra, March 24, GNA - Nominations of District Chief Executives (DCE) would be out early next month for approval by District Assemblies, Mr Charles Bintin, Minster of Local Government and Rural Development told the GNA on Thursday.
He was speaking in an interview after briefing the media on the Third Commonwealth Local Conference held from March 15 to March 18 in Aberdeen, Scotland.
Mr Bintim said in order to achieve local democracy, there was the need to deepen and strengthen democratic institutions, spread good practices and accept education as the key to open all doors. He called on district assemblies to generate funds locally rather than relying on the Central Government and foreign inflows.
"Local assemblies all over have been able to generate a lot of money to support their activities internally without relying on Central Government.
"I am looking forward to see local assemblies paying their workers from the funds that they generate internally."
He said DCEs should be made accountable to the people that they served and not the one who appointed them if the country's young democracy was to grow.
He said he supported the idea that DCEs should be elected.
