Non-performing contractors to be sacked - VEEP

Lawra, Nov. 9, GNA - Vice President Aliu Mahama on Monday warned that the government would not deal leniently with contractors who delay and do shoddy work on the selected schools to be expanded into model schools throughout the country.

As a result, he has directed heads of beneficiary schools to report the pace of projects and quality of executions to the right authorities for preliminary assessment in every region.

"We shall not hesitate to terminate the contracts of non-performing contractors and pave way for more competent and serious contractors to execute the work on schedule".

Vice President Mahama gave this warning at Lawra when he inspected work on the expansion programme of Lawra Secondary School as part of his five-day tour of the Upper West Region.

He said the government was spending huge sums of money on the project and would therefore, not countenance shoddy work from contractors who would thwart their efforts at bringing quality education to the doorsteps of every Ghanaian.

Wa Secondary School and Lawra Secondary School were the two schools selected, among the 30 schools throughout the country for upgrading. He said the second phase of 25 senior secondary schools throughout the country the country would soon commence to ensure that about 110 schools were expanded to reduce the annual burden on the well-endowed schools during admissions.

The expansion work, include the provision of more dormitories, classroom blocks, assembly halls and dinning halls to accommodate more students.

At the school, Vice President Mahama denounced MAK DAUDA Company Limited, A.I.C Contract Works, among others for doing shoddy work and asked their consultants to refuse their executions, while Alhaji Seidu Yakubu and P and W Ghanem were praised for their good work, but urged them to increase the pace of work to beat their deadline. He said, the expansion work was supposed to be beneficial to next generation and would not allow a few individual contractors to derail the progressive movement of the country.

The Headmaster of the school Mr. Felix Azuma appealed to the contractors to expedite action on the projects to enable them have the full complement of students for the school.

The Vice President also visited Kaleo, Takpo, Charikpong, Yaga, Babile, Brifo, Nandom and Hamile where he addressed chiefs and people of the areas.

Alhaji Moctar Musah Bamba at Hamile said Kufuor's administration has brought much development and recognition to every Ghanaian worldwide and urged the electorate to vote massively for the NPP in the forthcoming elections.

He said previously Ghana was recognised with coups and problems, but under Kufuor's administration Ghana was now synonymous with peace and development.

The Vice President was accompanied by Mr Sahanun Mogtari, Upper West Regional Minister, Alhaji Mogtari Musah Bamba, Member of Parliament for Wenchi East and Mr Ambrose Dery, Deputy Minister for Justice and Attorney General.
