Tamale, Oct 3, GNA - The Northern Regional branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Sunday elected Alhaji Sumani Zakari, a contractor, as Regional Chairman of the party.

He contested for the position with Alhaji Yussif Kukudana and Alhaji Saani Mohammed, who later stepped down.

Alhaji Adbulai Harunna, Alhaji Abdulai Silibom and Hajia Ayie Raliatu were elected as Secretary, Regional Youth Organiser and Regional Women's Organiser respectively, while Alhaji Omar Faruku got the nod as Regional Propaganda Secretary.

The elections were held in an atmosphere of tension, which necessitated the change of the venue from the Tamale Central Office of the party to the Regional Office near the Workers College. Tempers however cooled down with the intervention of party executives. Later in an interview, Mr. Baba Jamal, Deputy National Secretary of the NDC told the GNA that the party was in transition and as such, problems were bound to come up but added: "These problems will eventually be resolved internally within the party structure." He noted: "The NDC has an emotional and passionate following in the Northern Region, especially in Tamale, and as such tension mounts whenever executive positions are contested for."

He said it was a sign of maturity that the congress finally came off, adding: "Every political party has its internal struggles and conflicts, which have to be resolved by the leadership and its followers."

"If you have a party, where everybody supports one opinion without divergent views then the party cannot survive in a multi-party democracy," Mr Jamal said.
