Nsawam Police Arrest Notorious Criminal

Nsawam, Sept. 23, GNA - Baba Ali, 27, described by the Nsawam Police as a notorious criminal, was arrested last Sunday after evading the law for the past two years.

According to the police, Ali has been breaking into stores, houses and kiosks with his gang and robbing people of their monies and personal belongings with dangerous weapons.

Briefing the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at the Nsawam Police Station, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Alex Kodjo Wowolo, said the suspect was to be arrested on Friday, January 16, this year for allegedly breaking into a container store belonging to one Ms Augustina Opoku, a businesswoman resident in Adoagyiri.

DSP Wowolo who is the Nsawam District Police Commander, said some of the stolen items included 100 pieces of men's shirts, 24 pieces of ladies slippers, two dozens of men's jeans trousers, 70 pieces of lace materials, and a cash of GH¢100.00, all totalling about GH¢8,000. The Police Commander said Ali and his gang also went to Djankrom, a suburb of Nsawam, and broke into a store and took away 70 bags of cement and other building materials, after which they went into hiding when the police had embarked on a hunt for them.

He stated that on another occasion the gang stormed Amoahkrom, also near Nsawam, on June 27 this year, and attacked one Ms Mina Agyepong and Ms Rebecca Asare, ransacked their rooms and robbed them of GH¢3,000. Meanwhile, Ali has been remanded in police custody to reappear before the Nsawam Magistrate Court on October 6, this year, while the police continue with their search for the other members of the gang.
