John Ntim Fordjour, Member of Parliament for Assin South
Member of Parliament for Assin South, John Ntim Fordjour, has strongly condemned a recent viral photo of a same-sex couple kissing beneath Ghana’s iconic Independence Arch, describing the act as a direct insult to the country’s cultural and moral values.
In a post on X on June 26, 2025, Fordjour criticised what he termed the ‘desecration of a national monument’, accusing President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of fostering an environment of permissiveness on LGBTQ+ issues.
“Under Mahama & NDC, foreign gay couple boldly desecrate our national monuments: kiss under Independence Square, flaunting Ghana flag. They’re emboldened to defy the dignity and sanctity of our rich Ghanaian values right before our eyes,” he stated.
Fordjour, a vocal advocate of the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, reiterated the need to pass the legislation swiftly to preserve the dignity of Ghanaian values and institutions.
“We shall end this absurdity with the bill,” he indicated.
The anti-LGBTQ+ bill, which has been the subject of heated national debate, proposes strict penalties for individuals and organisations promoting or engaging in same-sex relationships.
It remains under review in Parliament amid both domestic controversy and international scrutiny.
