3FM’s Community Connect has discovered an early childhood development centre, Genesis Academy, operating on the open beach, opposite the Fire Service Training School in Accra.

The area, which used to house an abattoir, is popularly known as ‘Bone dey’.

It is not certain if the nursery school is authorized to train kids but the Accra Metropolitan Assembly’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Gilbert Ankrah, says “the AMA will investigate to take the necessary action”.

According to a deep-throat source who lives near the school, Genesis Academy has been active for nearly two months with a population of about 30 pupils, aged between two and five.

“The school also has three teachers,” the source said.

A secret amateur video recording shows Genesis Academy in a make-shift wooden structure at a popular sheep and goat bulk market.

The classroom is not enclosed, a large piece of old cloth covering one side, leaving the children at the mercy of the scorching sun, barren dust and rain.

The video also shows three Formica teaching boards, indicating three separate classes receiving instruction in a shared space.

There is no safe playing grounds, as the school is dangerously stuck in between the busy Atta Mills Highway, an ongoing building project, and the Gulf of Guinea.
