Nurses Attacked And Robbed Near Kasoa

Thu, 5 Sep 2002 Source:

More than thirty nurses in the Greater Accra Region have been beaten and robbed of their personal belongings at Ngleshi Amanfrom near Kasoa. The nurses who sustained various degrees of injuryhad gone to the village to properly demarcate a tract of land they have acquired in the area. Three members of the gang of armed men who attacked them have been arrested and placed in custody at the Odorkor police station in Accra.

The 35 nurses who were assaulted are members of the Greater Accra Regional branch of the Ghana registered nurses association. They had gone to Ngleshi Amanfrom to map out individual portions of land acquired for them by their association.

But aggrieved youth from the nearby village of Domeabra, who say their farmlands have been encroached upon pounced on the hapless nurses with sticks and cutlasses.

They beat the nurses, vandalised their vehicles and robbed them of their handbags and mobile phones. Principal Nursing Officer, El Frieda Abraham-Gaba, who is one of the casualties told JOY NEWS that they were attacked with “cutlasses, truncheons and guns”. She said when some of the nurses sought safety in their cars, the gang followed them “smashing the windscreens”.

The president of the Ghana registered nurses association Mrs. Emma Banga is beside herself with rage at the incident. She said in an interview with JOY NEWS that the nation “is already short of nurses”. She said attacking 35 of those remaining means that they can’t go to work and the wards will be empty. “This is very sad,” Mr. Banga said.
