Nurses attend special training in plastic surgery and burns

The Plastics and Burns Unit at the Korle-bu Teaching Hospital, has trained 44 nurses who have specialised in surgery across the country to better prepare them in emergency cases.

Nurses who partook in the course were selected from all the teaching hospitals and some non-teaching hospitals. It was sponsored by UKaid in collaboration with Interburns and other stakeholders with the support of Korle-bu Teaching Hospital.

The five -day course equipped the nurses with the knowledge on how to care for different skin types of burns and make them advocates at their health facilities on how best to treats burns patients.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in an interview in Accra, Director of the National Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and Burns Centre at Korle-bu, Dr Opoku Ware Ampomah indicated that the course was to upgrade the scales of nurses in plastic surgery and burns treatment.

He said usually when burns patients arrive at the hospital, the first people who would take care of the patients are nurses, hence the need for them to be tutored to better execute their work.

Dr Ampomah expressed gratitude to the nurses who helped to treat the burns of the survivors of last year’s June 3 disaster and asked them to at all times give off their outmost support to help heal the sick.

In an interview with Emmanuel Essandoh, Senior Nurse at Trust Hospital, he said the course was the first ever to be done in Ghana and he was delighted to be a part of it.

He said he was grateful to the stakeholders who made it possible.
