Nyariga Doone (U/E), July 8, GNA - Lack of furniture in the Nyariga Doone Girls Primary School in Bolgatanga is hampering teaching and learning, the Head Mistress of the School, Ms Adisa Emelia Abdulai, has said.

She said this at the school's PTA meeting held in the School at the weekend to review the activities and progress of the school. The school, which is the only girls' primary school in the Bolgatanga Municipality, now has a junior high school. It started with 35 girls in 1998 through the initiative of the Nyariga Doone Mothers' Club and was integrated into the mainstream education system to promote female education. Ms Abdulai said pupils from the Kindergarten to the lower primary lie on their stomachs to write. The primary school also lacks sanitary facilities for both teachers and children and they stand in open to pass water.

She expressed worry about the way some parents engage their children during instructional periods to carry out domestic chores or run errands. "This has created the tendency of absenteeism, lateness and truancy in some of the pupils especially on market days, funerals and farming seasons."

Ms Abdulai appealed to the municipal assembly and non-governmental organizations and philanthropists to help provide furniture to the school, complete the uncompleted teachers' quarters, provide a urinal pit for both teachers and the pupils, provide teaching and learning materials and school uniforms.
