Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Friday, December 12, 2025, Ayariga explained that the bill seeking to abolish the OSP had already passed scrutiny by the Committee on Private Members’ Bills and was set for presentation.

He noted, however, that the President’s Mahama's request had compelled leadership to rethink their approach.

“I can assure you that I will take on board the request by His Excellency the President for us to think about our actions, and I can assure you that I have always had confidence in the wisdom of the president.

“So, based on the request made to me the president, and my colleague, the Majority Chief Whip, I want to assure you that we will reconsider our decision,” he stated.

President Mahama had earlier described attempts to abolish the OSP has hasty.

Addressing the National Peace Council on December 11, 2025, he emphasized that the priority should be strengthening the anti-graft body rather than scrapping it,

The repeal effort, introduced on December 8, 2025 by Mahama Ayariga and Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, proposed returning exclusive prosecutorial powers over corruption cases to the Attorney General.

The sponsors argued that since its establishment eight years ago, the OSP had struggled with structural weaknesses, constitutional overlaps, duplicated functions, and high operational expenses.
