The government has awarded on contract the tarring of the eleven-kilometre Obuasi-Akrofuom feeder road at the cost of 7.1 billion cedis.

The project, which is to be completed within 12 months, will be executed by 'P and D' Limited, an Italian firm.

The Ashanti Regional Tender Board, chaired by the Regional Minister, Mr S.K. Boafo, awarded the contract last Friday.

Mr Joseph Kwadwo Boampong, Adansi West District Chief Executive, who announced this at the first ordinary session of the third meeting of the assembly at Obuasi, also said the Akrofuom-Mensonso road would be rehabilitated.

The District Chief Executive said the Feeder Roads Department would resurface the roads at the Dompoase Secondary School this year.

"Plans are also far advanced to get the Fomena township roads tarred by the end of the year," Mr Boampong said.

Mr Boampong said evaluation work on the reshaping of Kusa-Denkyee, Dompoase-Adokwa and other feeder roads has been completed and that the project would soon be awarded on contract while efforts are being made by the assembly to get the Nkwanta-Ampunyasi road upgraded.

On water and sanitation, the DCE said the Community Water and Sanitation Programme (CWSP) has taken off in the district with an office created at the district administration to supervise its operations.

Mr Boampong explained that the CWSP "about people working together to plan, develop and manage their own water and sanitation facilities".

He appealed to the assembly members to embrace the programme since it is demand-driven and also involves spring development, hand-dug wells with hand pumps, piped water supply, boreholes with hand pumps and rehabilitation of old water systems as well as household and institutional latrines.
