Oliver Barker-Vormawor, a leading member of the Democratic Hub
The Ghana Police Service has denied reports that it is refusing medical treatment to Oliver Barker-Vormawor, one of the leaders of the Democratic Hub it arrested over the hub’s anti-galamsey demonstration held from September 21 to September 23, 2024.
In a statement sighted by GhanaWeb, the police indicated that Barker-Vormawor, who fell ill on September 24, 2024, is on admission at the Police Hospital in Accra.
The police also indicated that Barker-Vormawor is one of two suspects of the Democracy Hub demonstration it arrested, who are currently receiving treatment after health complaints.
“Suspect Fanny Otoo, on Tuesday 24th September 2024, complained to the Police that he was indisposed, as the suspects in the case were being prepared for court. The Police sent him to the Police Hospital in Accra, where doctors at the hospital attended to him and later admitted him for further treatment.
“Suspect Oliver Barker-Vormawor was also taken to the Police Hospital for medical attention, having reported sick late last night, Tuesday 24th September 2024, where doctors assessed his condition and subsequently admitted him for treatment,” parts of the police statement read.
It added, “The Police would like to inform the public that at no point in time have the Police denied these suspects any medical attention.”
The statement by the police comes after lawyers of Barker-Vormawor made a passionate appeal to the Ghana Police Service for urgent medical attention for their client.
According to Justice Srem-Sai Esq., his client, Barker-Vormawor, fell seriously ill and an initial examination revealed that he needs urgent medical care.
“I will be grateful if you could, promptly, procure professional medical care for MR OLIVER MAWUSE BARKER-VORMAWOR, who turned himself in to your custody at 2:46 pm yesterday, September 23, 2024.
“This request derives from the recommendation from a preliminary medical examination which was conducted on MR BARKER-VORMAWOR after he was taken seriously ill earlier this evening,” part of a letter the lawyer wrote to the Commander of the Greater Accra Regional Command of the police reads.
Justice Srem-Sai also complained about the police not extending medical care to his client when he fell ill.
He added that: “the private medical care which we procured for him had to wait at the police station entrance for hours to be allowed access to him.”
