Oil tanker crashes onto Beposo toll booth

Beposo (W/R) , March 14, GNA - An articulated oil tanker, with registration number WR 906 V, last Friday, crashed onto the Beposo toll booth, the second time the booth had been crashed unto in thirteen months.

However, there was no casualty reported in the accident. In the first accident that occurred on February 13, 2010, two workers, who were on duty inside the booth, lost their lives. The Western Regional Director of the Roads and Highways, Mr Joseph Kodwo Nsia told the GNA in Takoradi that, the oil tanker, which was carrying oil palm, lost its breaks about 50 metres to the toll booth.

Luckily, he said the danger alarm bell in the toll booth sounded, which prompted the workers in the booth to escape before the vehicle crashed it, destroying the toll booth in the process. In view of this, Mr Nsia has indicated that, the toll boot would be re-located to a safer place after feasibility studies had been conducted at the new site.

He said a new toll booth had already been designed and it would be constructed after the Cape Coast/Takoradi highway had been made a dual carriage. The Roads and Highways Director noted that, when the first accident occurred last year, highways authorities decided to re-locate the toll booth from Beposo but it faced strong protest from the market women, who sell at the place, adding that, this time round they would not yield to any protest. Meanwhile, the Beposo police had confirmed the incident and had instituted investigations into the accident.
