One of Ghana’s stalwart rappers Okyeame Kwame aka the Rap Doctor, has realised his humanitarian dream as hundreds turnout for Okyeame Kwame Foundation’s free Hepatitis B screening and vaccination exercise held at James Town, Mantse Agbonaa in Accra on Saturday.

Unlike the ones held in the past which were limited to only screening, 300 out of the 500 screened people were vaccinated and would subsequently be invited for the two other required vaccinations to be administered at the Ridge Hospital for free.

The exercise facilitated by Ridge Hospital (Vaccination), MDS-Lancet Laboratories (Screening), Hepatitis B Coalition of Ghana (Education), clinical psychologists and counsellors among others, ran smoothly with people of diverse ages and sexes seated in queues comfortably under tents waiting to get screened.

In an interview with GhanaWeb, supporters of the exercise, Okyeame Kwame was elated about the turn out with lots of appreciation to the media for getting the message across to the public.

“We want everyone in Ghana to know about the effects of Hepatitis B so as to get vaccinated as the disease is curable. We have people here giving per hour updates of the exercise on social media to spread the word and get others involved”, he added.

Okyeame Kwame praised the participants of the exercise for staying calm and orderly during the process and hoped his message would get down with the people. A septuagenarian participant, Naa Korkor, who was in the queue with her daughter and three grandchildren said she was happy the exercise was brought to their community heaping praises on the organisers.

“It is difficult going to the hospital at my age and when I heard about this exercise, I had to call my family to go with me because it is free and good to know our health status to be treated”, she said in the Ga language.

The people gathered were entertained during the exercise with Okyeame Kwame’s music playing in the background while they were served water and drinks for nourishment. It was also sponsored by MTN Ghana Foundation.
