Ghana's first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, was not only an industrialist, peacemaker, and visionary leader, but he was also known as a unifier.
Dr. Kwame Nkrumah's legacy, deeds, and even shortcomings remain on the lips of many who knew him and the generations after him, all over the world.
During the 1960s, Dr. Nkrumah quickly understood the power of using sports, particularly football, as a unifying tool.
In view of this, he appointed Ohene Djan to serve as director of sports during his administration in 1960, while ensuring that structures were in place to support the success of the national team.
Dr. Nkrumah's interest in football was well known to the extent that he proposed the formation of a model football club that would offer leadership inspiration to other clubs in the country during his era.
That model club became known as Real Republikans, and was nicknamed OOC—Osagyefo's Own Club.
Two years after his overthrow in 1966, the country faced an unprecedented economic crisis which affected many sectors, including sports development.
These economic headwinds, coupled with political instability and civil unrest, left the growth of football and national team players in disarray.
However, an old image of Dr. Nkrumah captured among a team of footballers has emerged online.
In the image, Nkrumah is seen at the top far left corner of the photo, with his teammates. He could also be seen wearing spectacles.
