Accra, June 26, GNA - Korle Bu Teaching Hospital would need about one billion cedis to pay the salaries of health workers employed locally by the country's premier Teaching Hospital.
The health workers numbering more than 1,000 would have their salaries for June delayed since there were no funds generated internally to pay them because of the three weeks strike action embarked on by the Health Workers Group to demand the bridging of the gap between them and doctors under a new salary structure.
Mr Mustapha Salifu, Public Relations Officer of the Hospital, told the Ghana News Agency that the affected workers received their salaries from Internally Generated Funds (IGF) because the Government did not employ them.
Mr Salifu said the strike action had a great impact on the Hospital in respect of its IGF and hence the need for the Management of the health facility to mobilise additional funds to pay their salaries.
"We know they have bills to settle and families to take care of. In fact, they worked very hard and held the fort whilst their colleagues were at home."
Members of the Health Working Group (HWG), who embarked on a strike about three weeks ago to demand equity in their salary structure, resumed work on Monday.
Their strike action came during another industrial action of Doctors, who were demanding the implementation of a new salary structure and payment of arrears.
The health workers after hearing the package for Doctors withdrew their services until their salaries were reviewed to clear all the discrepancies.
