Only six elders are presently residing at Kwame Danso in the Sene District of the Brong Ahafo region, a town with population of about 15,000 after all the men in the town fled the area for fear of being arrested by the security forces.
A curfew was recently imposed on the town to restore peace and order.
According to reports, the security forces that have been deplored to the area continue to arbitrarily arrest people.
Reports suggest that all the men in the fled after a police officer shot and killed two civilians and wounded another person.
An opinion leader in the town, who travelled to Sunyani, informed DAILY GUIDE that only six elders including himself, are living in the town.
He mentioned that the situation has affected farming activities in the area, indicating that the development could affect the food situation in the region because the Sene area produces yam, cereals and other crops in the region during this season.
He passionately appealed to the President John Evans Atta Mills and the Inspector General of Police, Paul Tawiah Quaye, to address the problems.
It would be recalled that violence broke out about a fortnight ago after the youth of Kwame Danso, the district capital of Sene, embarked on a peaceful march in the town to register their displeasure about the delay in the installation of substantive chief for the area.
However, in the course of seeking a police permit, misunderstanding ensued and a police constable called Felix Dankwa fired a shot into the crowd and killed two in the process and wounded others.
The town folks beat him mercilessly to the point of death, but he later became conscious and was rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
According to the opinion leader, many people are arrested on daily basis by the police as the number of detainees had increased to over 200.
He said the curfew has made life unbearable for the people and asked the government to review it since the people are law abiding.
He said women and children in the town sleep in one room due to fear, claiming that a man called Tot, an NDC activist and self-styled chieftaincy contractor, who has been accused of stalling the installation of a new chief, is now leading the police to arrest innocent citizens of the area.
Meanwhile, the Dwan Youth Association has called for the release of 152 detainees who were arrested by the security forces. According to the group, almost all the people in police custody are innocent.
According to the members of the group, most of the detainees are strangers who came to the town to trade on the market day at Kwame Danso.
They explained that the area, after the death of the paramount chief, Nana Nyarko Banka, in 1996, has not had any substantive chief.
They said the youth, a day before the incident, closed down the traditional council building to express their displeasure.
