The Member of Parliament for Asutifi North, George Kyei Baffour, has strongly objected to President Mahama’s nomination of Mr. Akwasi Oppong Fosu as the Minister for Local Government and Rural Development.
According to the former President of National Association of Local Government (NALAG), Mr. Oppong Fosu does not have the wherewithal to deliver at the ministry.
Speaking to Citi FM in Accra, the MP revealed “I have some reservations about his achievements when it comes to local governance from the period of 2008 to date. “So if I want to assess him on achievements, I will indict him on that.
He is a fine gentleman but in terms of his ability to push the local governance system to the level of expectation, I have some reservations because there are numerous challenges confronting local government in this country and I doubt whether that demeanor of a person like Hon. Akwasi Opong Fosu will be able to rise up to that occasion”.
He stressed that the presidential nominee woefully failed to make any impact as Head of the Local Governance Service.
“The objective of the local government service is to ensure full integration of decentralized departments into the local governance system. Four years down the line, the service, under the tutelage of Hon Kwasi Opong Fosu has not been able to ensure full integration of the departments into the service. It has still being in limbo.”
Mr. Akwasi Opong Fosu is one of the 12 persons nominated by President Mahama awaiting parliamentary approval for various ministries.
