A Presidential Staffer, Krobea Kwabena Asante, has praised the influence of the New Patriotic Party’s caucus in the incoming 9th Parliament, despite their Minority status.

According to him, although the party was unable to secure enough parliamentary seats in the elections, the few they have are composed of knowledgeable and formidable individuals from the financial sector, with strong backgrounds in economics.

In a Facebook post on Monday, December 16, 2024, Krobea Kwabena Asante pointed out how individuals such as Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Dr. Gideon Boako, and Stephen Amoah, among others, who won their respective parliamentary seats, will closely scrutinise and oversee issues related to the public purse and financial matters if they are appointed to the Finance Committee of Parliament.

“Formidable Minority we'll have in the 9th Parliament. For example, with Finance Committee, having economics and finance gurus like Dr. Anta, Hon Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Dr. Gideon Boako, Dr. KB, Dr. Sticka, Hon Patrick Boamah, Hon Kwarteng et al on that committee will help the oversight role related to the power of the purse. Our MPs will need our support as it happened in 1997 and 2009,” he posted on Facebook.

Krobea Asante also called on party members to unite in support of their MPs, helping them fulfill their mandates as the opposition and minority caucus.

Following the conclusion of the 2024 general elections, the New Patriotic Party currently holds about 80 parliamentary seats based on provisional results, while the National Democratic Congress has secured about 185 seats.

Some seats are still being disputed, and others are being re-collated by the Electoral Commission.
