An executive member of the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU) has hinted of weekly nationwide demonstrations by labour unions if government does not take significant steps to address their demands.
The ICU executive member said Thursday’s nationwide demonstration was to impress upon government to take immediate steps to put the economy back on track.
Eliezer Nyawornu, the Tema Regional Officer of ICU, made these remarks in an interview with TV3’s Josephine Frempong on Thursday, July 24.
“I can assure you that after [Thursday’s] exercise if nothing significant is done, get ready that on a weekly basis across the country national unions are going to take steps to ensure that government gives listening ear.”
Organised Labour on Thursday presented a petition to President John Dramani Mahama through Minister of Employment and Labour Relations Haruna Iddrisu at the Black Star Square after demonstrating over worsening working conditions.
Regional representatives also presented petitions to Regional Ministers at the various Regional Coordinating Councils.
ICU’s General Secretary, Solomon Kotei, confirmed on TV3’s Agenda on Thursday that as a pressure group Organised Labour will continue to mount pressure on government until members' demands are met.
