Host of the Kokrokoo Morning Show on Peace FM, Kwami Sefa Kayi, has described the handling of illegal mining issues by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, as an indictment on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the government, and Ghana’s security agencies.

Speaking during a panel discussion on his show in the wake of rampant illegal mining, otherwise known as galamsey activities, Sefa Kayi stated that the Asantehene’s commitment to investigating allegations of illegal mining against some of his sub-chiefs and subsequently de-stooling those found culpable is an indictment on the president.

“Otumfuo’s action was informed by a Chronicle report. He followed up by causing an NIB investigation. NIB is a state intelligence organization. So, if Otumfuo has caused the NIB to work for him, how about the president? At the end of the day, while we applaud Otumfuo, it is an indictment on the president, the government, and our security agencies. Because if it can be done by the Asantehene, then why not?” he questioned.

The view shared by Sefa Kayi was in reaction to the recent destoolment of some chiefs by the Asantehene for their involvements in illegal mining activities.

Sabronum Gyaasehene Nana Awua Gyau, Sabronum Akyeamehene, and Baamuhene on August 26, 2024, became the latest victims of the Asantehene’s crackdown on illegal mining.

According to the Asantehene, he had caused the National Investigations Bureau to conduct an investigation to establish allegations of culpability against the said chiefs following reports of their involvements in galamsey.

Meanwhile, there are continued calls on the government to take firm actions against illegal mining, which remains a threat to Ghana’s forest reserves and water sources.
