'Our Bible, our Quran say no and our people say no' – Bawumia on why his government will not allow LGBT+

The Vice President and Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has reaffirmed his objection to homosexual activities being accepted in Ghana.

According to a news report by 3news.com, the NPP flagbearer, during his campaign tour in the Savannah and Northern Regions, assured that LGBT+ activities would not be accepted in the country if he becomes president.

He said that major religions in Ghana and the cultural values of the country do not support such activities and therefore, they are unacceptable.

"This is because our Bible says no, our Quran says no and our people say no," he is quoted as having said during his campaign tour in the Northern Region on Thursday, May 16, 2024.

The vice president is also reported to have made the same point to chiefs and Muslim leaders of the Savannah Region at Damongo on Wednesday, May 15, 2024.

"There is this issue of LGBT+ which people are talking about. It is something that I will never allow to happen as president.

"Our religion is against it and the Ghanaian society is also against it. It will never happen here," he said.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia stated in unequivocal terms his strong opposition to the practice of homosexuality in Ghana when he commented on the LGBT+ issue for the first time in April 2024.

Speaking at the Eid-ul-Fitr prayers at Kumasi, Dr. Bawumia told thousands of Muslims that he is strongly against the practice because his faith as a Muslim is against the practice, and so is Christianity and Ghana's social norms.

"I would like to take this opportunity to personally comment on the raging issue of LGBTQ+ in Ghana. First of all, it is important to note that our cultural and societal norms and values as Ghanaians frown upon the practice of homosexuality.

"Furthermore, as a Muslim, my view on this matter aligns with the position of my religious faith. The Holy Quran is replete with verses frowning upon LGBTQ+ acts, including same-sex marriages. My faith is therefore very strictly against the practice of homosexuality, with no 'ifs' or 'buts.' No shades of grey."

Dr. Bawumia was equally unequivocal in stating that as president, he will continue to be strongly against it in line with his personal belief, the stance of Ghana's leading religious groups, as well as the Ghanaian society.

"I personally cannot support that which my religion, and indeed, all the major religions in Ghana, clearly and unequivocally forbid.

"All the major religious traditions in Ghana, Christianity and Islam, are opposed to this practice, and I stand opposed to it now, and I will stand opposed to it as president, Insha Allah," he added.
