Security Analyst, Col Festus Aboagye (retired), says the country has deviated from its democratic system of governance.

He noted that Ghana’s democracy has now taken a nosedive in a majoritarian form, in which the majority side always seems to have a freer hand and final say on issues.

“If you take a look at our democracy now, it has turned out to become a majority rule instead. It is the majority of the NPP. But they should understand that it is not in their cabinet capacity to hold meetings somewhere, and “make laws” and present them to Parliament for a bill passage for its implementation to become laws all because they have the majority of its members in the House."

Me [Col Festus Aboagye Rtd], for instance, had no idea of these reviews in the public holidays but only to hear its pronouncement in the public domain that the Founders Day Celebration has been changed from its initial July 1 to August 4,” he said.

He stated that in consensus-based democracies, voting is not necessarily used to determine an issue, settle controversies or reach an agreement. Rather, factions build consensus and reach agreements amenable to both sides before implementation.

“In a nutshell, there should have been a discussion on the change of dates in these public holidays but there was nothing of such,” he added.

He suggested getting an Independent Committee made of scholars with in-depth knowledge about Ghana’s historical antecedents, to handle such issues.
