The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has described the decision by the Electoral Commission (EC) to disqualify its presidential candidate, Kofi Asamoah-Siaw, as unreasonable. The party is also claiming that the disqualification is unsupported by law.

According to the PPP, after it filed to contest the elections, the EC wrote back to them informing them of errors identified on the forms. The party’s National Chairman, Nana Ofori Owusu, revealed in a statement that the party, after receiving initial feedback on Saturday, September 14, 2024, made the necessary corrections and resubmitted the corrected documents on Sunday, September 15, 2024.

The PPP said it waited for further communication from the EC, but none came, only to discover later today that they had been disqualified on the grounds that there were errors on their forms. The party insisted that once the identified errors were corrected, it was wrong for the EC to have claimed through the media that it had identified new errors and yet failed to allow them to make the corrections.

Nana Ofori Owusu said the PPP views the disqualification as a deliberate attempt to prevent them from completing the necessary procedures and participating in the electoral process.

“As a party that upholds the principles of transparency, fairness, and democratic participation, we are disheartened by the apparent lapses in communication and procedural adherence that have led to our exclusion from the Presidential Elections ballot.

In light of these developments, the PPP respectfully requests a thorough review of the circumstances surrounding our exclusion from the ballot, along with transparent communication and rectification of any oversights that may have occurred.

We remain committed to upholding the democratic values and principles that underpin our electoral system, and we trust that the relevant authorities will address this matter with the urgency and impartiality it deserves.”
