Our goal is to make Volta Region a showpiece - Veep

Kadjebi (V/R), Nov. 26, GNA - The New Patriotic Party NPP) Government would not be content until it had fulfilled its agenda to make the Volta Region a haven of prosperity and united its people to be stronger than ever, Vice President Aliu Mahama has said.

Vice President Mahama re-echoed this remark in all his addresses in the Volta Region and when he paid a courtesy call on Nana Akumpi Finam, Omanhene of the Kadjebi Traditional Area and Member of the Council of State, at his palace.

"We want the people of the Volta Region to know that we care and we are serious about doing business with them," he stressed. "Our agenda is to tear down the walls of poverty, ethnicity and intolerance in every corner of the country and we need you to come aboard so that in unity President john Agyekum Kufuor will lead Ghana to the land of prosperity."

Vice President Mahama said the NPP Administration was worried that some politicians had made ethnicity, hatred, deceit and misinformation the core theme of their campaign in the Region and asked the people to reject those shameless people.

"They preach division and ethnicity, which cannot bring progress, and even make you start hating people you have never seen before," he noted.

"You must not listen to them because they have nothing good to offer. It is those who bring love, unity and peace, who must be your friends because they mean well."

The Vice President said Ghanaians, wherever they hailed from, must be perceived as one people with a common destiny, stressing that it was unacceptable to use politics to sow disunity to partition the country. He advised: "No area must be considered the preserve of one particular party and for that matter a no go area for another party. Our President may hail from one region today but it does mean the country belongs to his kinsmen. At another time, the President may hail from another place because the country does not belong to only one group of people.

"What we must do is to support leaders, who bring development to us and improve our welfare, that is what politics is all about. There is no need to tie our fate to only one party, especially when it cannot make any positive impact on our lives."

The Vice President said he was glad that some chiefs and people of the Region had expressed appreciation to the President Kufuor's Administration for the significant improvement in their standard of living as a result of the many development projects executed over the past four years.

He introduced Mr Rashid Bawa, Minister of State at the Ministry of Education Youth and Sports, to the people of Kadjebi as the NPP's Parliamentary Candidate for Akan Constituency and canvassed their support for him.

Nana Akumpi Finam acknowledged the NPP Administration's good performance in his area, saying the upgrading of their roads was unprecedented and would, therefore, restore Kadjebi to its former glory as a vibrant commercial town in the pre independence era. At the Kadjebi and Bueman secondary schools, where he inspected the ongoing projects to turn them into model institutions of academic excellence, he urged the students to be advocates of national unity and peace, saying as the leaders of tomorrow they should be concerned about holding the nation together.

"You must be wary of people, including teachers, who embark on hate campaigns and embark on your own mission to promote peace, unity and love," he said.

The Vice President also advised them to be disciplined, hard working and determine to maximise their time at school to be able to pursue higher education and become distinguished professionals.

The Vice President has since ended his three-day campaign tour of the Region, which took him to a number of communities in the Krachi West and Krachi East, Nkwanta South, Nkwanta North, Kadjebi-Akan, Buem and Biakoye Constituencies.
