Chairman of the National Peace Council (NPC) Most Reverend Professor Emmanuel Asante has asked Ghanaians to continue to help maintain the peace in the country.
He has expressed happiness over efforts by the two major political parties to educate their supporters on the need to espouse peace.
“I hope that the supporters will listen so that the peace that we are all experiencing will not be a mirage,” he stated on TV3’s News 360 on Thursday, August 15, 2013.
Rev. Prof. Asante recounted how West African cities like Freetown, Monrovia and Abidjan were “destinations” prior to the chaos that they suffered.
“Everybody wanted to go there,” he told TV3’s Nana Aba Anamoah.
The immediate past Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church-Ghana insinuated that Accra should not be allowed to undergo the fate that the cited West African cities suffered.
“It will not be irksome for us to talk about peace, peace,” he said, dismissing criticism that the tension in the country is being blown beyond proportion.
“It is better to talk about peace than to talk about the possibility of peace or war,” he stressed.
‘Law lords right on point’
Rev. Prof. Asante lent support to the decision of the Supreme Court justices to bring to book foulmouthed politicians, confessing “we have all been concerned about the lack of civility in our political discourse”.
“I think the law lords were right on point.”
He explained that power is sought to take care of the people and not to create animosity and tension among our people.
“I believe we grow and we need to grow with our political culture,” he pointed out.
