Founder of African University College of Communication, Kojo Yankah has attributed the current economic crisis of the country to what he describes as a broken value system.

He believes the indigenous traditional values which were embedded in Ghanaians by our forefathers have been neglected due to personal gains, contributing to our woes as a nation.

According to him, founders of this nation respected and recognised the traditional culture and values but that can’t be said for this current generation since everyone is busy competing amongst each other.

Speaking at the PR Week Lecture 2018 on the theme ‘Deriving value from values (a test for corporate governance)’, Kojo Yankah said “greed and selfishness and abandonment of our indigenous traditional values have contributed to the current crisis” because people are now fighting for their own personal survival and not prepared to surrender any part of their country’s sovereignty to guarantee self-reliance.

The former Minister of Information in the Rawlings administration quizzed why governments continue to abandon projects initiated by previous governments and why politicians only react to situations when people protest and wonders if they really care about the national ethos.

Mr. Yankah believes the broken value system is the reason most youth dream of owning expensive cars and houses without working hard for it.

“How do people survive on their meagre salaries; who buys three bedroom houses for 1 million dollars in a country which has few known billionaires; what has become so attractive for young people without any working experience to want to own expensive cars and houses; why is there so much confusion in our social services particularly in health, education, sanitation, agriculture; what makes it necessary for citizens in some parts of Ghana to hold placards on the streets before political actors react to their woes, why do government refuse to continue with projects initiated by previous governments, do we really care about the national ethos”, he stated.
