Over 350 motorists arrested in 2 months for using fake stickers

Over 350 commercial and private drivers were arrested between February and March this year, for using fake roadworthy stickers.

This follows the introduction of the three-dimensional screening device, an electronic device which is used in verifying the stickers.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Mr. Rudolph P. K. Beckley, who disclosed this to The Ghanaian Times yesterday said some of the suspects had been put before court and fined while others were still facing court action.

He said realising the harm that middlemen popularly called ‘goro’ boys had been causing by faking the manual stickers, his outfit introduced the electronic device which had various features to detect if the stickers were genuine or fake.

Explaining how the device works, Mr. Beckley said when fitted on the stickers, the light on the device automatically decrypts to provide information on the stickers including bio-data.

So far, he said 100 pieces of the electronic machines have been given to the police, with 1,900 more to be given to them.

Within the same period, the Authority lost close to Ghc15,000 through the use of dubious stickers; noting that the introduction of the system has saved a lot of revenue which could have gone waste.

For instance, between the first quarter of last year and that of this year, the DVLA managed to increase its revenue by 55 percent.

Mr. Beckley appealed to the public to go through the right processes in acquiring stickers, instead of contracting middlemen to acquire the stickers for them.
