Yawkorkor (E/R), Oct. 11, GNA - Two tributaries of the Densu river Awenfi and Apesika at the weekend over flooded their banks destroying properties worth several millions of cedis and rendered a number of inhabitants of Yawkorkor homeless in the Eastern Region. Madam Barbara Ablorh, Assembly member for the area, who led the Ghana News Agency to visit the area at Yawkorkor, a farming community near Suhum in the Suhum-Kraboa Coaltar District said the floods also destroyed the only bridge which serves the community and its surroundings.

The floods also destroyed some buildings and rendered about 200 people homeless while goats, sheep, fouls and pigs were drowned. Madam Ablorh said the collapsed of the bridge has compelled the people to carry their food produce and walk about five kilometres to Nsawam and Teacher-Mante to sell.

Mr. Isaac Kwaku Larbi an opinion leader of the community appealed to the Suhum-Kraboa Coaltar District Assembly to come to their aid for the construction of a permanent bridge on the river to save lives and properties.

Meanwhile the flood victims are staying with friends and relatives at Teacher-Mante and Nsawam.
