PAC resumes sitting today

The Public Accounts Committee of Parliament will resume sitting today, Tuesday 2 May, after the May Day break.

Last week’s sitting revealed how large sums of monies accruing from the auction of government vehicles at the Ghana Health Service and Food and Agriculture Ministry could not be accounted for. It also revealed how state cars were sold for very low prices.

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) is expected to appear before the committee.

Meanwhile, the Minister of State in charge of Food and Agriculture, Dr Gyiele Nurah has said his ministry has put in place stringent measures to check the activities of some auctioneers in the sale of government vehicles.

Speaking to Class News’ Ekow Annan, Dr Nurah was optimistic such financial infractions would be reduced, if not eliminated.

“We’ve always taken it that the auctioneers know their job so when they come from the Chief of Staff we assume that everything is OK so we just allow them to go round and do their job until the audit comes and these queries are coming out. So what we have done is, before an auctioneer is left to go on the field he must come for total briefing from us and based on what has transpired here, we are going to exercise caution and take them through all the weaknesses in their system and tell them what could happen so that they would take more caution. And we must see the advert before auctions are done and that they follow due procedure. So we are now up to it and not leaving it just for them to do their own thing,” he stated.
