PAWA calls on AU to halt ‘inhumane’ treatment of Libyan migrants

The Pan African Writers’ Association (PAWA) has called on the African Union Commission (AUC) to urgently intervene and halt the obnoxious human slavery incidents being committed in Libya.

A statement signed by Professor Atukwei Okai, PAWA Secretary-General, and copied to the Ghana News Agency, said the AU must immediately arrange for the arrest of the perpetrators of such atrocious acts.

The statement said the arrogance and brutality being meted to innocent migrants, most of whom are black Africans seeking for opportunities, was repugnant and grossly inhuman.

It said the resurfacing of human slavery in Libya is of grave concern and we note with alarm and dismay, the atrocities and human rights violations being perpetrated within the borders of Libya.

The statement said the slavery and slave markets in Libya are not only abhorrent, but a blight on the harmonious and peaceful culture.

It said the various gatherings at the United Nations underwrote and insisted painstakingly on building the capacity for peaceful coexistence across the globe and this is the paradigm we need to follow.

The Association, representing African writers and thinkers from 55 African countries on the continent, said it expected a speedy and expeditious progress on the matter.
