President Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo has finally broken his long-held silence over the controversial military agreement with the United States of America, an agreement which has been described by anti-crusaders as an infringement on Ghana’s sovereignty.
The national address which was broadcast live by major news outlets from the seat of presidency with the intention of bringing finality to the raging debate has since been heavily backlashed by known critics from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
In the address, the outraged President slammed members of the opposition NDC over recent outburst on the deal describing them reckless self-seekers, who will be exposed and condemned by Ghanaians within the shortest possible time.
Amongst other things, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo strongly refuted widespread reports suggesting that government has given the United States of America the green light to set-up a military base in Ghana-a claim which has being the core this whole brouhaha.
“Let me state with the clearest affirmation that Ghana has not offered a military base, and will not offer a military base to the United States of America,” he said.
“Indeed, the United States of America has not made any request for such consideration and, consistent with our established foreign policy, we will not consider any such request. However, in consideration of the realities of our circumstances and the challenges to peace in our region in our time, we have deemed it prudent to continue the Co-operation Agreement with the United States of America”, the President stated
