Denu, Nov. 11, GNA - Dr Edward Nasigrie Mahama, Presidential Candidate of Peoples' National Convention (PNC) has said his Government would transform "strategic towns" into major centres of economic growth and development nation-wide. He noted that many of such towns notably in the Northern Region and Aflao in the Volta Region had become "economically incapacitated" and "socially disillusioned" out of neglect by previous governments prompting their youths to seek better prospects elsewhere. Dr Mahama made the pledge during a courtesy call on Togbe Amenya Fiti V, Paramount Chief of Aflao Traditional Area as part of his campaign tour of the Volta Region.
He said Aflao and the rest would have major and modern market centres, including programmes to add value to economic products indigenous to those areas towards expanding internal trade. Dr Mahama said Ghanaians now had a good opportunity to change the future of the country for the better by voting the PNC into office to quicken the pace of the country's development through real jobs, improved education and expanded utility and social services. Presenting his running mate Madam Petra Amegashie to Togbe Fiti, he said her new status was a major catalyst that would propel the PNC to victory judging from her popularity among the public. Togbe Fiti, urged political parties and their leaders to ensure that they abide by electoral laws and regulations for fair and peaceful elections.
Dr Mahama addressing a rally at Denu said his campaign had exposed the reality of under development in the country, making him more eager to take the country out of the woods. Madam Amegashie said the towns she knew in the Volta Region years back, had deteriorated, contrary to claims by previous governments. Alhaji Ahmed Ramadan, National Chairman of PNC who together with Hajia Adjara Ali Women's Organizer, Mr Philip Abban, the Presidential Candidate's Media Coordinator, said justice, fair play and equal opportunities were essential in securing peaceful elections in the country.
