PNC calls for Kufuor's personal intervention in conflicts

Wa, Feb. 28, GNA - Dr. Edward Mahama, Presidential candidate of the People's National Convention (PNC), has called for the personal intervention of President John Agyekum Kufuor in conflicts threatening to tear many communities apart before he leaves office.

He said as father of the nation, there was the need for the President to spearhead the resolution of these conflicts, especially those that erupted during his tenure, in order to leave a clean slate for any leader who would take over from him.

Dr Mahama said this during an interaction with media personnel at Wa on Wednesday after a campaign tour of the Upper West Region to thank delegates for electing him as Presidential candidate and to also spell out his vision to the electorate.

He said whoever would take over from President Kufuor could be bogged down by conflicts if President Kufuor did not end the current cycle of conflicts before leaving office and this might make the incoming administration ineffective.

He mentioned the Bawku and Yendi situations as very serious conflicts that needed the personal intervention of the President. Dr Mahama said the PNC was ready to merge with the Convention People's Party if there was a genuine commitment for such a venture from the CPP but the PNC would never do so under any condition that called for its total dissolution.

He said the party's campaign would centre on corruption, which had become the order of the day, and numerous uncompleted projects that were spread over the country were a visible evidence of the corruption that had engulfed the nation.

"Most of these uncompleted projects were undertaken by the private companies of the District Chief Executives. PNC will commission a panel of experts when it takes office to take a census of all uncompleted projects and execute them for the benefit of the poor who are now suffering under corrupt practices".

"My Government will go further to reverse the situation where 103 signatures are needed before contractors are paid for work done", he said. Dr Mahama said his party would be a formidable contender in this year's election and was optimistic that the PNC would win more seats in the region but expressed regret that some people in the region had been voting "skirt and Blouse" that was not in the interest of the PNC.
