PNC group petitions Council of Elders

Accra, Dec. 7, GNA - Scores of leading members of the People's National Convention (PNC) on Tuesday called on the Council of Elders of the party to investigate acts of unconstitutionality allegedly perpetrated by the current leadership.

The members known as PNC Committed Group have accused the leadership of the party, including Dr Edward Nasigre Mahama, four-time presidential candidate of the party, Alhaji Ahmed Ramadan, the Chairman and other leading members of violating the party's Constitution.

A statement to the Ghana News Agency in Accra signed by Mr Bernard Bama-Ame, Secretary, identified the illegal acts as the composition of the current National Executive Committee (NEC) and the Standing Committee (SC). The PNC Committed Group is made up of former Members of Parliament, polling station agents and former National Executive Members. The statement said: "These acts of illegality by the leadership have caused the PNC to lose public affection. Now the party only exists as an academic and legal reality and not as the third largest political party. "Since 1996, the party has performed miserably and got less than one per cent of the votes in the last elections."

The statement said the leaders had also failed to render account for their stewardship, especially after Elections 2008. The Group, therefore, called on the Council of Elders to immediately intervene by setting up an Interim Management Committee to steer affairs and prepare the party for an early congress. 7 Dec. 10
