PNC organises workshop for party executives

Tema, Nov 28, GNA - The People's National Convention (PNC) has initiated a programme to strengthen the party's base at the constituency level for it to win more votes in the 2004 elections.

The party with financial assistance from the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), on Friday, organised a day's workshop on political leadership and democracy for over 60 constituency executives in the Greater Accra Region that was attended by some National Executives.

Topics discussed included "political parties and democracy", "funding of political parties", "principles of leadership for political party and "challenges of political party leaders".

Mr Gabriel Pwamany, the PNC General Secretary, in an opening address, said while PNC has been vibrant in the media landscape with the leadership being articulate, it becomes disappointing when "we come to election results for the two previous elections and recent bye-elections."

''We have traced part of the problem to the fact that our party executives are not working as diligently as they should and it is for this reason that the National Executives have decided to strengthen the base of the party through training programmes'', he said.

Mr Pwamany said the future of the PNC depends on the training of its party functionaries.

''It is, therefore, incumbent upon you to share the experiences that you will gain here to train the executives and other party functionaries so that they will know the roles to play to help PNC achieve political power in future elections.''

The PNC General-Secretary said the party should have a new role for the sustenance of PNC as an alternative government, adding that this could only happen if its activities help to keep the government in check.

Alhaji Ahmed Ramadan, Deputy National Treasurer of the party urged members to get involved in all party activities adding, ''We should not conduct ourselves in such a way that after every election we bow down in shame.''
