PPAG extends reproductive health to rural communities

The Youth Action Movement (YAM), has ended a five- day vacation camp at Nkyenua in the Akuapem North Municipality to extend reproductive health knowledge to the rural communities.

YAM, which is also the youth wing of the Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana were mainly from the Accra Branch of the movement.

The Movement organisation a float through Nkyenua and surrounding communities and a football match to create awareness among the youth to abstain from sex to protect themselves against teenage pregnancy and Sexually Transmitted Infections.

The YAM members also introduce the youth and elders of the community to regular early morning aerobics to keep fit and protect themselves against diseases.

The vacation camp was climaxed with a durbar of the chiefs and people of Nkyenua during which the members of YAM educated the community on how to protect themselves against contracting HIV and to plan their families to help improve their standard of living.

As part of the vacation camp programme, the elders of Nkyenua organised a training programme to teach the members of YAM in the manufacture of gari and palm oil.

Speaking to Ghana News Agency, the Chairman of the Accra Branch of YAM, Mr Luther Addy, called on the youth in the urban areas to volunteer their time to go to the rural areas to educate the people on reproductive health.

Mr Addy said, such interactions could also help enrich the experiences of young people in the urban areas and make them more informed about developments in other parts of the country.
