PRESS RELEASE FROM THE SCIENCE STUDENTS ASSOCIATION OF GHANA

The science students association of Ghana wish to thank the Africa Initiative Project for lending greater and more practical support to the government efforts towards improving science education in Ghana by donating assorted science books & journals to University of Ghana and the Methodist University.

educational needs int he contemporaray world has changed while existing facilities and equipments in the country tertiary institutions have been over stretched, and therefore there is the need to be replaced or expanded to meet the ever growing population of students entering the institutions to major in science. it is for this reason, we commend the AIP for their rather self help spirit and concern for science education in Ghana. science which has become the vehicle for transformation of many countryies needs to be given the needed attention to help produce good sciencetist to change the fortune of the country.

the science studnets association wish to make a special appeal to corporate bodies to collaborate with the tertiary institutions int he country especially int he field of research and development. we also wish to toplead with the leading industries int he country to help the SSA implement the Experiential Prgrams in Science (EPiS) aimed at providing practical experience to the students in the various companies int he country. the association also wish to thank the American Chemical Society for the donation of books worth over 200 million cedis. the association is also grateful to Ms Hogdson and Nancy Keteku of the US embassy for their meritarious contributions towrsd the advancement of science education in Ghana through the science students asssociation programs. it is our hope that this fruitful collaboration will be sustained.

SCIENCE STUDNETS ASSOCIATION OF GHANA AWARDS 15 PERSONALITIES Fifteen persons fromthe science community were awarded by the science sctudents association of Ghana at a ceremony -an important function on the science studnets associationof Ghana calender to recognize and honour scientists & students who have made outstanding contributions to science and also help improve upon science education in general. Mr Amedzeame-Dorbu, the current National President of the asociation ws awarded the 2004 gold medal (the highest) in recognition of his meritarious service to the society, science community, the numerous donations (science books) he secured for the various institutions, the design and implementation of the Eperiential Program in Sciences (EPiS) and his outstanding contributions to science, most notably in the area of research.

Twelve other personalities and institutions were awarded for their meritarious contributions The patron of the society Nana Yaw Gyasi Owusu asked the recipients not to relent in their effores but work harder.

Mr Amedzeame-Dorbu said the presentation had coem at a opportune time and promised to work harder to help improve upon science education. He announced plans by the association to send some executives to US to understudy the American Chemical Society Experiential Programs in Chemistry (EPiC) to help implement the EPiS prpgram of the association in Ghana. He dedicated the award to Ms Hogdson and Nancy Keteku of the US embassy.

The new President of the legon branch announced receipt of docuemnts regarding shipment of 40" container of books by partner organisations in the US for the various institutions in Ghana.

American Chemical Society Donates To Legon

Mr Dennis Emmanuel Amedzeame-Dorbu; a level 400 chemistry major student of University of Ghana has doanted over 15000 books and journals University of Ghana worth over 200 million cedis at a ceremony held in Accra. On recieveing the doantion, the Vice Chancxellor called on students to see this as a wakening call to think of what they can do for their country and not always demanding things from the government.He also promised to assist the donor in whatever way to enable him honour his promise.

The books were from the American Chemical Society of which Mr. Amedzeame dennis is a member .

Mr Amedzeame Dennis called on student leaders to stop taking money from students and not doing anything for them. He also made apledge to secure over 100,000 books and equipments for the three public Universities in Ghana given the needed support. the donor promised to secure over 100,000 science books for the public Universities in Ghana.

The Dean of Science in his speech described the donor as one student who has done so much to help move the faculty forward. As President of the Science Students Association Of Ghana, he has organised numerous seminars and programs to help sesitize students on science education and its relevance to society. The last of which was a graduate School program organised for students of the University at which personalities like Nancy Keteku of Public Affairs of the US embassy and a represenattive from the British Council talked to the students
